Lock Picking Devices

There are several different lock-picking devices to choose from, but a good starter set will include tension wrenches to apply rotational pressure while the pins on the plug are manipulated; standard locksmithing picks for single-pin manipulation; and various “rakes” that are more comprehensive flat pieces meant for sweeping over multiple pins quickly to determine if they can be lifted. Raking is a quicker method than traditional picking, but it requires knowledge of the pins and their shear lines and can be erratic, so if you’re new to lock picking it’s best to focus on mastering standard techniques first.

Another popular pick is the snake rake, sometimes also called a Bogota or C rake. It’s an effective pick because it has many peaks of different heights and can be used in a rocking or scrubbing motion to lift the different peaks of the pins to their shear lines. It’s a bit more bulky than some other pick profiles, so it’s often not suitable for smaller or paracentric keyways.

Another common device is a lock pick gun, which has a gun-like body with individual picks nozzles on top. When inserted into the lock simultaneously with the tension wrench, it’s possible to rapidly manipulate the driver and key pins above their shear line so that the plug can be turned. It’s an extremely handy tool to have in a pinch, but it isn’t necessarily a replacement for learning standard technique.
